WESTCOAST SONGFEST JOONDALUP WA - NOVEMBER 11, 2010

A lovely event organised yearly by a small dedicated group of local music teachers in the Joondalup area of Western Australia.
The West Coast Song Fest (formerly known as the West Coast Warblers),began in 2000 with 6 schools and 450 students singing. It was the inspiration of a very talented music teacher, Mrs Judy Vorster.
The festival was established to provide a performance opportunity for developing primary school choirs. The intention was that the choirs would perform in a non-competitive environment, encouraging participation rather than competition and allowing the students to build good relationships with other schools and members of the community.
This year repertoire orchestrator, Donna Marwick-O’Brien and her collegues, will gather together some 1800 children for the performance which takes place at the Joondalup Arena for a one hour concert.
The amazing thing about the event is that the children only have a one hour rehearsal as a group directly before the event having practiced their role in the 2 or 3 part harmonies in their own schools beforehand.
That is what we call a fine community effortWhere is it? Joondalup Arena, Joondalup, Western Australia
What Makes your Festival Unique? We have 1800 children performing this year and for the past 10 years have averaged 1400.
Who is Appearing? The children themselves plus talented young artist/singer/songwriter, Matt Larsen.

Nelson Arts Festival New Zealand 14-25 October, 2010

Making Connections
Last year at the Festival we had actor Gavin Rutherford being whisked by speeding taxis from one venue to the other after appearing in both Le Sud and Hotel – this year there’s less drama, but still some overlapping. Jack Shadbolt, the star of The Intricate Art of Actually Caring has also been cast in the lunar hit APOLLO 13:Mission Control, taking him from Jerusalem up the Whanganui River almost to the moon!  Jack isn’t the only recent addition to the APOLLO cast. Cohen Holloway, fresh from winning the best actor at the Qantas Film and Television Awards for his role as David Dougherty in Until Proven Innocent and starring in the hit NZ movie Boy, is cast in the role of legendary American broadcaster Walter Cronkite, reporting on the space drama as it unfolds.
Visit our website www.nelsonartsfestival.co.nz for show and booking details for Intricate Art of Actually Caring and APOLLO 13: Mission Control.

Cam’s in his dancing shoes
Festival marketing co-ordinator Cam Woods get’s his turn at picking a show this issue:
‘Having never been able to figure out how to co-ordinate my feet, let alone my body while performing any type of dance, I’ve always found the combination of grace and power shown by professional dance astounding.  So as my pick for this week I’ve selected peso medio performed by ladoCiego company from Buenos Aries. This is tango performed in a contemporary, powerful and evocative manner from by four fantastic dancers. It tells the story of a boxer struggling to make his way in Buenos Aries (peso medio translates as middleweight) and isn’t traditional tango from the ballroom floor. Instead this is cutting edge, raw dance from the streets of Argentina.
As Julio Zurita from ladoCiego says ‘...the public doesn’t see peso medio, they experience it...  It’s very dizzying at times and doesn’t give time to breathe. ‘
This is a fantastic opportunity to see international dance of the highest calibre direct from the home of the tango.’
See peso medio at the Theatre Royal, Thur 14 Oct 8pm, Fri 15 Oct 6.30pm.
On the Road
Some of our shows are already on the road, performing in other venues here and overseas. In this section of E-news we report on how they’re being received.
Miranda Harcourt’s Biography of My Skin began its New Zealand tour at the Clarence St Theatre in Hamilton last weekend. The Waikato Times critic Rob Kidd had this to say:
“Harcourt got a great response from the audience…the second stanza was fantastic though there weren’t as many laughs but there were some incredibly touching moments…
The line between life and art is often blurry and this production takes it to new levels. It’s no wonder Harcourt said this was one of her proudest acting achievements – it has the potential to be career defining.”

See Biography of My Skin at the Theatre Royal, Sat 16 Oct and Sun 17 Oct, 6pm.

That’s it for this week. Grab a programme, eat gruel for a week and splash out on as many tickets as you can!

Open Air Festival (Czech Republic)
Open Air St Gallen (Switzerland)
The Oya Festival (Norway)
Hadra Trance Festival (France)Rock For People (Czech Republic)
Rototom Reggae Sunsplash (Spain)
SOS 4.8 (Spain)

Criteria
All of the festivals have signed up to support environmentally good practices wherever possible and work with their audiences to reduce the festival's carbon footprint, particularly from audience travel which often constitutes in excess of 70% of greenhouse gas emissions from rural sites. Festival organisers also have to complete a fifty three question assessment covering travel policies, CO2 emissions, waste and recycling policies, water use, noise pollution, environmental impact and green office policies. Festivals also have to undergo an independent environmental audit by an assessor sent by A Greener Festival.

A Greener Festival co-founder Ben Challis said, "We have had a record number of entries in 2010 and we are on track to make a record breaking 50 plus Awards this year (up from 37 festivals in 2009, 32 festivals in 2008 and 16 festivals in 2007 when the Awards scheme began). This is particularly impressive, not least because of the economic downturn but also because year on year we have raised the bar and made our Awards scheme more and more focussed on a meaningful and practical responses to climate change and pollution".

He added, "We are also delighted that we have had more European and Australian festivals entering, new entrants in the UK and growing interest in the USA, and also that a number of festivals are entering into other schemes such as the 10:10 campaign as well as using established and proven tools from Julies Bicycle to measure and then reduce greenhouse gas emissions."

The final list of the 2010 Greener Festival Awards, which will include additional UK and US festivals which have taken place in August and September, will be made at the beginning of October.

This festival award actually has some meaning. Unlike other festival awards, its based on a fair comparison by the assessors who have actually attended the festivals and carry out an independent environmental audit, and isn't based on marketing through emails begging for votes, and a self interested short-list of festivals, or people voting for or against festivals they have never attended - through all these things other awards are made completely meaningless.
